The short journeys in late summer and autumn provide a perfect opportunity to visit the most beautiful highlights in and around the capital of the Netherlands in a relaxed way on board comfortable barges purpose built for cycle touring.

Itinerary:

Day One: Amsterdam – Haarlem. Arrival and embarkation in Amsterdam. Embarkation and check-in where the crew will welcome you on board is from 2pm in Amsterdam, Veemkade. From about 5 pm you will enjoy a dinner cruise to Haarlem. During a stroll around the historic old city in the evening you will very quickly understand why the beautiful city of Haarlem has inspired artists for centuries. Day Two: Haarlem – Zaanse Schans or Haarlem – Zaanse Schans ( 25 km/15 miles) | Zaandam – Alkmaar or Zaandam – Alkmaar (40 km/24 miles) Today can choose to either stay on board the ship and enjoy the beautiful scenery as it glides past in comfort or take part in an optional bike tour (ca. 25 km/15 miles) to the open-air museum “Zaanse Schans“ (incl.) with its beautiful windmills, an old Dutch village, a cheese farm and a traditional wooden clog maker. Once again in the afternoon you can choose between cycling or cruising on board the ship to Alkmaar, the home of Holland’s most renowned cheese market. After dinner there will be a short stroll around Alkmaar’s old town. Day Three. Alkmaar – Amsterdam – Volendam or Alkmaar – Volendam (35-50 km/21-30 miles) After breakfast you travel by ship from Alkmaar through the polder land of the Province of Northern Holland (a polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments) and over the IJsselmeer to the picturesque fishing village of Volendam. Covering an area of 1100 m2, the IJsselmeer was formed in 1932 by the construction of the 32 kilometre-long Afsluitdijk (Afsluit Dyke) which effectively cut off the ocean to form Western Europe’s biggest lake. In Volendam you will enjoy a short stroll around the town (included). In the harbour area make sure you enjoy the local specialities smoked eel “Paling” or the salted herring “Maatjes”. Day Four. Volendam – Amsterdam or Volendam – Amsterdam (35-50 km/21-30 miles) You will once again have a choice to make today between staying on board the ship as it sails back to Amsterdam over the IJsselmeer or pedalling through the beautiful Waterland district to Amsterdam. Whatever choice you make you are guaranteed to be delighted by the beautiful scenery along the way. In the evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy a cruise through the canals of Amsterdam. Day Five: Amsterdam End of your trip. Disembarkation after breakfast around 10am. End of your trip.
