This expedition will give you an excellent insight into life in Borneo and deeper understanding of the plight of the orangutan due to deforestation!

Trip Highlights:

Travel along the Rungan River aboard the luxurious Rahai'i Pangun.

Observe amazing wildlife including orangutan, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, red langurs and brahmini kites.

Visit the orangutan visitors centre at Nyaru Menteng where we will learn and understand the work they are doing to protect the orangutan.

Visit the famed Camp Leakey and neighboring feed stations in Tanjung Puting National Park.

Travel upstream on our local klotok (river boat) and dine beneath the stars.


Day One. Arrive in Bali/Jakarta. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your Bali /Jakarta hotel for overnight stay. Here an OO representative will meet you and escort you through the airports for your flight to Borneo. Day Two. Bali/Jakarta/Surabaya to Pangkalan Bun - Tanjung Puting National Park This morning you will fly from Bali/Jakarta via Surabaya to the Central Borneo town of Pangkalan Bun. On arrival you will be met at the airport by our local OO team and guide. You will then be taken to the Port of Kumai where you will board our klotok (river boat) and start your journey up the Sekonyer River into the National Park. Later that day you will visit feeding station #1 and see your first orangutans. Afterwards you will be back aboard our klotok and along the river looking for proboscis monkeys. Overnight at Rimba Lodge. Day Three. Rimba Lodge - Pondok Tanggui - Camp Leakey - Crocodile Lake: An early start today will see you back on the klotok and headed to Pondok Tanggui (feeding station #2) for morning feeding. After this, you will be traveling up the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey, the oldest camp, set up for the orphaned orangutans. Upon arrival at Camp Leakey you will have lunch aboard the klotok before you start your visit with a short trek in the surrounding area and visit to the information center. You are likely to see orangutans (or have them see you) near the boat. You will then head off to see the afternoon feeding. After enjoying the feeding time of the orangutans and being given a tour of the surrounding forest area, it’s back to the boat and cruising down the Camp Leakey River to Crocodile Lake where you will spend the night. You will most likely see other wildlife of Borneo such as gibbons & proboscis monkey. Overnight on the klotok. You will be provide with a mattress, pillow and mosquito net. Day Four. Crocodile Lake - Pondok Tanggui - Pesalat - Tanjung Harapan – Fireflies: Early morning start sees you back down the river to Pondok Tanggui for morning feeding again. It's then off to Pesalat Plantation where you will get to plant some trees to help regenerate the forest. You will be given GPS coordinates to locate the trees that you planted. From there you will be back on the boat for lunch and depending on time you might get another final orangutan viewing at Tanjung Harapan station or a tour of the local village. Later that afternoon you will take the boat down the river to a mangrove of Nipah Palms, where you will get to see millions of fireflies and stop for your last night’s dinner in the park. On the way you will hopefully be able to see many proboscis monkeys along the river banks. Then it's back to Kumai by klotok and overnight at Swiss Belinn Hotel in Pangkalan Bun. Day Five. Pangkalan Bun – Palangaraya: Today you will travel by car from Pangkalan Bun to Sampit and then onto your resort hotel near Palangkaraya. Travel from Sampit to Palangkaraya will take approximately 8 hours but you will get to have a lunch break in Sampit before you head on to Palangkaraya. Overnight at Ragun Sari Resort. Day Six. Nyaru Menteng and visit town tour: Today you will visit the BOS Foundation's Information Centre in Nyaru Menteng. Set within a peat swamp forest reserve, this center houses orphaned orangutans first received into their rehabilitation program. You will learn more about the program in the education center. After you will have a traditional lunch by the river and be taken into town for a tour of the stilted villages and see the local museum. Overnight Rungan Sari Resort. Day Seven. River Boat tour starts: Today, you join your luxury river boat, the Rahai'i Pangun. You will be transferred to Panlangkaraya airport and then transferred to your boat in Palangkaraya harbour to start your journey. You will cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upriver along the forest lined river, passing villages. In the early evening, you will take a canoe through the shimmering black water lakes. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini kites.Return to the boat for a quiet dinner in the midst of the jungle. Day Eight. Marang – Kanarakan: Today the Rahai'i Pangun moves up the Rungan River as you enjoy breakfast. On arrival to Bapallas Island, you will get to take a motorised canoe to observe orangutans. Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River. Arriving in the afternoon, welcomed by the village elder with Dayak Ngaju welcoming ceremony then stroll around the village with a local host to see the village home gardens, rubber field and rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit to the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee while sharing stories. Back to the boat and cruise down to Lake Tahai. Overnight on board. Day Nine. Kanarakan – Tangkiling: Today you have the option of dawn canoeing to the lake for bird watching.Leisurely breakfast on board. You will get to visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert then a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus. Back to the village and see a larger collection of the traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals. Back to the boat and cruise downstream to Muara Rungan passing Katimpun village. Overnight near Muara Rungan. Day Ten. Palangkaraya - Bali Today you will leave the river boat and be transferred to the airport to link up with your return flight to Bali/Jakarta. You may have one more night accommodation at either Swiss Bel Rainforest Hotel, Bali or FM7 in Jakarta.
