Trip Highlights:

There will be a variety of transportation used ranging from buses, private vehicles, river boats to canoes, trucks, walking and of course lots of tough trekking as well. This really will be a voyage of discovery and an expedition where you must expect the unexpected. The trip will be starting and finishing at orangutan rescue centres and you will be able to spot exotic wildlife throughout the whole trip. From crowded villages to dayak traditions, from flowing rivers to inland lakes, from palm oil plantations to magnificent mountains, this tour really does have it all!


Day One. Arrival Jakarta. You will met by hotel staff and transferred to the FM7 hotel. Today we meet in our Jakarta hotel and have a team briefing and prepare for travel to Balikpapan in East Borneo tomorrow morning. Overnight at the FM7 Hotel. Tomorrow the journey begins!

Day Two. JAKARTA – BALIKPAPAN – SAMBOJA LESTARI. Early morning flight to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan and car transfer to Samboja Lestari lodge. The lodge is operated by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) and also location for their orangutan quarantine and rehabilitation centre. On arrival we will have a chance to look around and visit the orangutan islands and learn more about the important work they do here. Afternoon we will see the sun bear sanctuary ahead of a visit to the “black river” to observe the proboscis monkey. After dinner we shall hold our official TBC tour briefing and undertake final gear checks. Tonight we shall prepare our gear for an early morning departure. Overnight at Samboja Lodge.

Day Three. SAMBOJA – SANGATA - KUTAI NATIONAL PARK. Early morning start for our car travel to Kutai National Park and wildlife viewing. Along the way we will stop at the equator landmark. Arrive in Sangata, transfer by motorized canoe to Camp Kutai National Park and check in at simple accommodation in the park. Afternoon and evening trekking. Dinner & overnight at camp at research station.

Day Four. KUTAI NATIONAL PARK - LOAJANAN- MAHAKAM RVER. Car transfer from Kutai National park to the river town of Loajanan, where we will board our house-boat and start travel along the Mahakam River. Continue our travel overnight on the river to reach our next stop. Dinner & Overnight on house boat.

Day Five. MAHAKAM RIVER - MUARA MUNTAI – MANCONG - MELAK. Today we will leave our house boat and continue along the river by both speed boat, stopping at a dayak village along the way to learn more about their traditional way of life. Overnight in small village of Melak at Loseman.

Day Six. MELAK – KERSIK LUWAI – EHENG – TERING – LONG BAGUN. Continue along the river by longboats until we reach the small village of Eheng. Here we will meet our cars and drive to Tering where upon arrival board our speed boat and continue our travel up the Mahakam river to the local village of Long Bagun.

Day Seven. LONG BAGUN – TIONG OHANG Speed boat and cruise up the Mahakam river by passing several rapids, wall rock, waterfall through to village. Then sight-seeing around the village to see the activity of local people.

Day Eight. TIONG OHANG - ATIKOP HILL - MUARA SAITE Board by motorized canoe passing several small rapids. Start trek today. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Nine. MUARA SAITE – MUARA CUHUTING Continue our trekking through primary rainforest and rivers. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Ten. MUARA CUHUTING – MULLER RANGE Continue trekking through the Muller Range and will pass the border East and West Borneo. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Eleven. MULLER RANGE – BUAH KIU RIVER Continue our trekking through primary rainforest and rivers. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Twelve. BUAH KIU RIVER – BUNGAN LEA Continue our trekking through primary rainforest and rivers. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Thirteen. BUNGAN LEA – BORAKAN Continue our trekking through primary rainforest and rivers. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Fourteen. BORAKAN – BATU BOBO Continue our trekking through primary rainforest and rivers. Overnight jungle campsite.

Day Fifteen. BATU BOBO – TANJUNG LOKANG Today is last day trekking to Tanjung Lokang, the homeland of Punan tribe. Overnight at village lodge.

Day Sixteen. TANJUNG LOKANG – PUTUSSIBAU Head down the Kapuas river to Putussibau by long boat.

Day Seventeen. PUTUSSIBAU – LANJAK – TEKENANG. This morning we travel by car to the town of Lanjak, followed by a short motor bike ride and then speed boat/long boat across Sentarum lake national park to island of Tekenang. This afternoon we shall take a cruise aorund the lake to see the local villages and hopefully some wildlife. Overnight at the local rangers station.

Day Eighteen. TEKENANG – SEMITAU - SANGGAU. Wake up early morning for climb to the top of the island for sunrise, and then another canoe ride looking for wildlife. Then an early lunch and our canoe ride to Semitau. Then it’s the rest of the day on a long road travel to the town of Sanggau where we shall have dinner. Overnight stay at local Hotel/Losmen.

Day Nineteen. SANGGAU - SADAHAN (Gunung Palung National Park). Today is a long day of car travel for us all the way through to the village of Sadahan on the edge of the National Park. Here we shall rest up and overnight stay in our simple lodge accommodation.

Day Twenty. LUBUK BAJI – GUNUNG PALUNG NATIONAL PARK. This morning we head into the National Park and start our jungle trek to the Camp. Once we have arrived at Camp, we shall head out, in search for some wild orangutans and other wildlfe. After returning for lunch we shall head back into the jungle once again, with our forestry ranger accompanying us, to lead the jungle trek and search for wildlife and Orangutans. Late afternoon, back to the camp for having dinner and overnight camping.

Day Twenty One. LUBUK BAJI – KETAPANG Early morning we will do another jungle trek looking for orangutan and wildlife. The back to camp for pack out things and trek back down to the village and meet our cars for the road trip to Ketapang. Check in hotel and rest. This afternoon we shall enjoy sunset on the beach with a refreshing drink. Tonight we will meet IAR and learn more about the work being done to save and rehabiltate orangutans. Overnight at Aston Hotel.

Day Twenty Two. KETAPANG – IAR QUARANTINE CENTRE. This morning after breakfast we head to the IAR orangutan rehabiltation centre in Ketapang. We will learn about the important work that they are doing in order to save the orangutans and why your efforts in raising funds and awareness are so important to support their work and other similar groups in Indonesia. Today when we enter the IAR gates it will mark the official end of the event. Tonight we have a final celebration dinner. Overnight Aston Hotel.

Day Twenty Three. KETAPANG – AIRPORT – DEPARTURE This morning we transfer to Ketapang airport for your return flight to Jakarta and link up with your return journey home.
